In August 1965, engineers and policymakers gathered in Lagos, facing the challenge of connecting a rapidly growing city. They had a plan for a new arterial route, the Second Mainland Bridge, a project that would forever change the city’s landscape. This ambition also marked the start of a decades-long relationship between Nigeria and a then-little-known German construction firm.
Julius Berger Tiefbau AG won the contract for this monumental undertaking, formally beginning its operations in the country. The bridge, later named the Eko Bridge, opened on February 8, 1969, a symbol of national development even as civil war raged. Its construction, phased between 1965 and 1975, laid the foundation for modern Lagos and for Julius Berger’s enduring presence.
The birth of a vital Lagos connection
The story of the Eko Bridge began with a clear need: to ease the increasing congestion on Lagos’s existing connections between the island and the mainland. Nigerian officials sought to improve the city’s nascent transport system. It was in this climate that Julius Berger Tiefbau AG secured the contract for the Second Mainland Bridge in 1965.
The project, a significant civil engineering endeavour, was approved by Shehu Shagari, who served as Minister of Works during Nigeria’s First Republic. Funding for the ambitious plan came through a soft loan from the Federal Republic of Germany. This financial arrangement, valued at ₦31.2 million, or approximately £6 million European loan, underscored the budding technical partnership between the newly independent nation and West Germany.
Engineering a pioneering feat
The construction itself was a groundbreaking undertaking for Nigeria. Engineers introduced pre-stressed concrete technology to the country, marking the Eko Bridge as the first project to use this advanced method. Its design spanned from Ijora on the mainland to the Apongbon area of Lagos Island, a critical artery for commerce and daily life.
When commissioned, the bridge measured approximately 4.1 kilometres in total length, including its vital approaches. The lagoon section alone stretched 430 meters, while the landward extension added another 1,350 meters to its considerable structure. At the time, it was hailed as Africa’s longest concrete bridge, a testament to the scale of Nigeria’s post-independence ambition.
A bridge forged amidst national turmoil
The official opening ceremony of the Eko Bridge on Saturday, February 8, 1969, took place during one of Nigeria’s most challenging periods. The Nigerian Civil War, which began in 1967, was then in full swing, casting a long shadow over the nation. Yet, the work continued, and the bridge stood as a symbol of progress.
Major General Yakubu Gowon, then Head of the Federal Military Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, presided over the formal inauguration in Lagos. His presence highlighted the government’s commitment to development, even in wartime. While the bridge was commissioned in 1968, the 1969 event marked its public debut and integration into the national consciousness.
Julius Berger sows its Nigerian roots
The success of the Eko Bridge project firmly established Julius Berger’s reputation in Nigeria. Though Julius Berger Tiefbau AG secured the initial contract, the local entity, Julius Berger Nigeria Ltd., was formally incorporated on February 18, 1970, with incorporation number RC 6852. The bridge, therefore, predated the local company but launched its enduring presence.
The efficiency and quality demonstrated by the German firm were quickly recognised. This led to further crucial contracts, including the repair of the vital bridge over the River Niger at Onitsha in 1970. This early triumph, amidst the difficulties of reconstruction, cemented Julius Berger as a dependable partner in Nigeria’s post-war rebuilding efforts.
This early period of significant infrastructure development coincided with a critical time for Nigeria’s independent journey. The nation was charting its course, and projects like the Eko Bridge were physical manifestations of that ambition. For Julius Berger, it meant a continuous stream of work on roads, dams, industrial facilities, and port projects throughout the 1970s and beyond, ultimately extending to the development of Abuja.
The Eko Bridge: an enduring system in Lagos transport
Today, the Eko Bridge remains an indispensable component of Lagos’s complex transport network. It stands alongside the Third Mainland and Carter bridges as one of the essential links connecting Lagos Island with the mainland. Its strategic importance has only grown with the city’s exponential expansion.
For more than half a century, it has facilitated the movement of millions, serving as a critical artery for commuters and commerce. This continuous heavy use, however, demands constant vigilance and substantial maintenance. The bridge, as a system, requires ongoing care to function effectively.
Decades of wear and necessary repairs
Over the years, the Eko Bridge has undergone numerous rehabilitation efforts to ensure its structural integrity and continued usability. The first phase of rehabilitation works occurred from August 23, 2014, to October 27, 2014, spanning 71 days. Another partial closure took place on July 4, 2020, for additional repairs.
The Federal Ministry of Works conducted a second phase of rehabilitation from October 23, 2021, to November 9, 2021. The Alaka to Costain section, which had been closed since June 4, 2021, was reopened on Friday, August 13, 2021, after a 10-week rehabilitation period. An existing contract for comprehensive maintenance, awarded in February 2022, was expected to continue through 2026.
The Federal Government announced the reopening of Eko and Apongbon Bridges ahead of schedule at midnight on July 9, 2023. This crucial step helped alleviate traffic stress caused by earlier closures due to fire incidents. Later, on Sunday, July 16, 2023, the Lagos State Government announced a 24-hour closure of the Eko Bridge inwards the newly reopened Apongbon Bridge for immediate palliative works.
More recently, in April 2025, Works Minister David Umahi inspected underwater and structural elements of major Lagos bridges, including Eko Bridge. Then, on May 6, 2026, the Federal Ministry of Works reported a significant incident where illegal dredging activity led to a barge striking a pile cap near Eko Bridge. Umahi confirmed damage to several supporting piles, prompting emergency engineering intervention and specialist underwater investigations.
Just this week, on August 10, 2026, repair works involving Eko Bridge and Marine Bridge were formally flagged off during a Lagos stakeholders’ engagement. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was represented at the event by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. These continuing repair cycles underscore the bridge’s immense importance and the perpetual effort required to maintain such foundational infrastructure.
A foundation for Nigeria’s infrastructure future
The Eko Bridge was more than just a transportation project; it became a crucial catalyst for Julius Berger’s growth into one of Nigeria’s most recognisable engineering and construction companies. Its success provided a blueprint for future large-scale developments. The company’s trajectory, from that initial 1965 contract, reflects a period of ambitious nation-building.
For Lagos, the bridge symbolised a leap forward in urban planning and connectivity, allowing the city to accommodate its burgeoning population and economic activity. It remains a physical manifestation of a formative period in Nigeria’s post-independence history, a reminder of the strategic choices made and the systems put in place.
